Blog Tour NYC- New Technology from Mr. Steam

Mr-Steam-iSteam-ModelI’ll be on my way to New York City next week to start Modenus’s Blog Tour and I just can’t wait!  There are so many fabulous sponsors that help make this tour possible.  One in particular that I have  worked with several times in the past: Mr. Steam.  Mr. Steam is a luxurious steam shower and accessory manufacturer – always on the cutting edge of technology and offers the finest in spa-like products for the home. Imagine having a shower system that plays music and releases relaxing scents and therapeutic colors with the warm, encompassing steam, and then stepping out to a warm, fresh towel from a towel warmer….Sound like heaven?  We all know the benefits of steam bathing – from clearing respiratory congestion to moisturizing and softening dry skin – Mr. Steam’s state-of -the-art technology and innovation creates a spa-like”experience”  that is second to none.  This is exactly why we’ve specified and installed many Mr. Steam products for our clients over the years in both new construction and Master Bath renovations – and our clients could not be happier!   Now, Mr. Steam is once again pushing the boundaries of luxury steam shower technology with the new iSteam, a touch panel control system that greatly enhances the experience of the steam shower.  The iSteam panel is simple in its design, recesses flush into the wall and is available in both black and white finishes. It  provides a user-friendly interface that allows you ultimate control over every aspect of your shower, from music to aromatherapy. As an extra option you could include the iGenie which will preheat your steam shower from up to 100 feet away!     This new technology is an incredible indicator of Mr. Steam’s ability to stay ahead of the game in the changing face of the world.  Our homes, phones, and lifestyles are becoming “smarter” and more automated and convenient as time passes, and by integrating both smart phone and home automation technology into one easy-to-use panel, Mr. Steam shows initiative in driving this trend.  There’s a reason they’ve been around for more than 50 years, after all.

It’s All in the Details: Adding the Finishing Touches to a Home Design

When planning a major renovation of any space in your home, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and become overwhelmed with the massive changes taking place.  Walls are removed, kitchen’s are gutted and dust is flying….just for starters. Everything old becomes new again – new cabinetry, appliances, floors and furniture are installed – with new colors infused throughout . Yet some of the most important elements of the overall design can be the finishing touches and subtle details that are nestled inside. It’s these details which make a house…..your home!

Once the big changes are made, the final touches and details provides the room with a sense character which unifies the entire design.  It’s like the garnish on a dish or the right accessories to complete an outfit; without the details the room would look new and function well, but look …a little flat.

Spectacular lighting is one detail that should never be overlooked.  The right lighting can transform the mundane to magnificent. In a”modern” environment blend recessed lighting with a sculptural element, for a simple and very effective detail.  Well-chosen light fixtures really acts as the  jewelry for a room.

Selecting the proper display items, decorative accessories, and artwork to suit an overall design can be a major challenge.  You want them to reflect your personality and tastes, but they also need to work well with the other colors, styles, and design elements in the room. A single, piece of  artwork  or spectacular chandelier that pack a punch will not only create a focal point in the room, but add your personality to the space.

What are your favorite finishing touches?  Share them with me in the comments or on my Facebook page! Stay Inspired!

Large Kitchen Islands for Form and Function

Home renovations that focus on the kitchen are a favorite among homeowners, and the kitchen is often cited as an area of the home in need of a makeover -both for function and aesthetics.  One way to add style and function to your kitchen is incorporating a large, multi-purpose island to the space. With an endless array of designs and kitchen layouts a large island will instantly improve the overall function of your home’s hub.

 • The Everything Island: I really love large islands that serve as the focal point of the kitchen. You can include the sink, counter space, wine storage or microwave if space allows.  Add a few stools and you have the ideal breakfast bar. It adds a distinctive look to a kitchen and welcomes everyone to join in on the fun.
 • Plan Appliance Locations Thoughtfully: Managing the traffic flow throughout a busy kitchen requires some careful planning. Space the work triangle so that appliances have ample clearance when open, never open into each other and the cooks have enough space to work side by side.
 • Cookbook Storage: If you love to cook like I do, open shelves are a great place to store cookbooks and other kitchen miscellany within easy reach. They will also add some great character and color to the kitchen area.
 • Lighting: For a more elegant touch, add glass doors and recess lighting to your island’s cabinetry. This is the ideal spot to display your favorite dishes and highlight your colorful pottery collection.  Multiple layers of  lights are both functional and mood provoking so add dimmers to those light sources.

Designing Your Home to Last

If you take the time and energy to plan a home renovation, make sure it is designed to last.  While new paint and accessories are a great way to update a space with a fresh new look, more extensive architectural interior design changes should be made with an eye toward the future. Answering a few important questions about how you really live will help you develop important design decisions and features within your home. Considering your future plans for more children, an aging parent or a returning college student will help guide your design strategy to add functionality, expand, or repurpose rooms. Looking forward and anticipating the long-term needs of your family will help you enjoy your home and neighborhood for years to come.

It goes without saying that home with a bonus room or a basement is the ideal spot for a children’s playroom- but design it with some flexibility in mind.  Once the children have grown out of that “playroom” the space should easily be repurposed and used as a home office for homework and provide those teens (and parents) with a great living space to hang out with family and friends. If that space includes a full bath…then you’re well on the way to transforming it into a suite for returning college students.

Always invest in the highest quality materials and furnishings your budget will allow!. Avoid trendy items and fads that will undoubtedly become outdated. Instead, purchase quality pieces that get better with age. Investing in quality furniture with classic lines will stand the test of time. And when it comes to colors, select a foundation of neutral on the big ticket items which are then be easily updated with interchangeable accessories in highlighting colors and patterns.

World Tour of Design: Cuba

It’s been a while since we last took a trip on our World Tour of Design where we last traveled to the beautiful country of Russia.  In this week’s World Tour, I’d like to head somewhere a little… warmer.  After all, spring is well on its way to the States, and with it comes fresh weather and the start of vacation season.  The warm, tropical island country of Cuba is full of refreshing design inspiration to welcome spring and summer into your home.  Let’s take a look at the common design features of Cuban architecture and interior design. Prerevolutionary Cuba was known for a distinctive architecture heightened by the tastes and expenses of a rich entrepreneurial class. They maintained large sugar and tobacco plantations and mansions, and they sought interior design inspiration from the Art Deco and mid-century 1950s styles. These styles embraced luxury and comfort, integrated with a beautiful backdrop of tropical, earthy landscapes.

Cuban Mansion

Many of the mansions in Cuba have been restored to their original architectural splendor, providing plenty of interior design inspiration for your home. Parisian-inspired accents like the matching torchères sculptures and blackamoor table of the marble hall of the Museo de Artes Decorativas, once a 1920’s mansion, can be easily incorporated in your own home.  The mid-50s mahogany spiral staircase at a Guatao chapel and the Cuban butacas and woven cane chairs gracing the original decor of Ernest Hemingway’s living room at Finca La Vigia are also elements that can easily be implemented into your home.

Hemingway Living Room

Beyond the historical influence, it goes without saying that tropical plants and palm trees are essential to Cuba’s island flavor. Open interior spaces evoke the spacious and relaxing experience of watching the sparkling ocean washing over sandy beaches.

Great colors to use in a Cuban-inspired design are lush shades of green, sunny yellows, orange, coral and expansive palettes of blue for tropical flavors. Light linens give expression to the easy flow of island winds, enhanced with light-colored floors and draperies. Terra cotta also has a pronounced presence on the island. It is found not only in the architecture but also in the floor tiles and vases which helps promote an earthy feel that is natural to the island. Large, exposed windows are another important design element which connects the interior to the exterior environment that is another signature of Cuban interiors. World Tour of Design: Russia

Our last World Tour of Design took us to England, where we explored English Country and Victorian style for your home. Today I’d like to continue the world tour with what I’ve learned about Russian architecture, art, and interior design. Most of the iconic architecture in Russia is church-based. For centuries, only churches could be constructed of stone, and those are the buildings that have survived the test of time. They also reflect the diversity of design during several eras in Russian History. Saint Basil’s Cathedral (circa 1560), for example, is representative of the Renaissance Era. The dramatically sloped roofs on the numerous domes of each structure make a powerful visual impact.

Architecture in Russia

Today, Russian interior design is a cultural mix that reflects country’s commitment to art, education, and music. Heavy, rich fabrics are used for window treatments and thick, comfortable rugs adorn the floors. Remember, Russian winters can be brutal, so interior design tends toward warmth and comfort.

Library at Pavlosk Palace

Interior décor in Russia has, for the most part, been conservative, with weighty furnishings of heavy wood. As their economy makes a comeback, modern home furnishings now have a more minimalist style, with a heavy emphasis on artistic accessory pieces.

Be Bold – Say it With Stripes

Whether you are planning on wearing them or decorating with them, there is no doubt that stripes make a statement. Using stripes in your interiors presents some incredible opportunities to develop personality and a rich style to a room that would otherwise be viewed as …. mediocre. Stripes can be fun, bold, colorful, and create the illusion of volume and space.

Quiet Bedroom Stripes

Consider the following for some great interior design inspiration:
 1. Use the direction of the stripes, whether horizontal or vertical, to bring attention to items in the room.
 2. Stripes bring a feeling of order to a space, compliment this with with solid colors in a geometric method around the stripes.
 3. Choosing the right direction of the stripes can make a room appear longer, shorter, taller or smaller.
 4. The width of the stripes that you use will also make a big impact on the appearance of the room. Keep proportion in mind….introduce finer stripes in a quaint spaces and beefier lines in more spacious environments. The visual effect created by this pairing results in a bold texture that is stimulating.  Thin Vertical Stripes
 5. Blend stripes on stripes with solids and floral patterns to add more layering and interest to the room.
 6. Be selective in the colors that you choose to place. Bright colors will often mute anything else they are near, while dilute colors will make a less bold and more elegant mood.
 7. Stripes make an excellent accent to any room and any design style – whether classic, traditional or coastal interiors, consider adding a simple cushion on a bench, or chair slip cover.

If you love the playfulness that can be achieved with the use of stripes but are uncertain of how to make it work for you, I’d be happy to help you design your space.  Just contact me at Interior Makeovers, Inc. for more information!

Design with Live Plants for Healthy Living

I love nature. The natural world provides comfort, relaxation, and a measure of peace. Live plants can bring some of the health benefits and beauty of nature into your home, where you can enjoy the feeling of a spring day even if it’s snowing a blizzard outside. To get the maximum benefit of using live plants as part of your interior design, follow these tips.

Live Plants in the Kitchen

Health Benefits of Plants  Using live plants as part of your decor can help make your home a healthy one. Live plants produce oxygen and help purify the air. Though nobody in my house suffers from breathing problems, some of us do get headaches, and we like having clean air without a noisy filter system. Live plants are also beautiful and peaceful, so they help relieve stress.

Tips for Designing with Plants Integrating built-in planters within the home creates instant architecture and works with many design styles.  Hanging plants can also create a focal point that sets off a dining space, where a small interior tree can fill an empty corner. Add some lighting from over head or ground up – to accent these plants and trees for some extra drama! Think of terrariums scattered on a dining table or architectural bamboo trees for a sculptural element.

Plants in the Bathroom

Safety Tips If you have pets at home, be careful about which plants you introduce. Many are toxic, and you want to try and avoid those if you have pets and small children. Do a little research before you invest and get the right ones for you.

Add Drama to Your Bathroom with a Free Standing Tub

If your bathroom is feeling cramped and humdrum, there’s a simple way to add space and style to the area: replace your old tub with an exquisite free standing tub!  I love the drama that free standing tubs bring to a bathroom.  They add an air of  sophistication and elegance and creates an immediate focal point within the room, as if it were a piece of sculpture.

free-standing tubs bathroom renovation

Why Free Standing? A drop-in or under mount tub built in to a decking is somewhat expected these days, and at times can feel more like a functional fixture than something that is supposed to be comfortable. A free standing tub gives the appearance of a more spacious bathroom and the variety of unique designs available will enhance any style of master bath.

free-standing tubs bathroom renovation

What Type of Tub Should You Choose? Select a tub that has a unique style that fits your taste and design sensibility. For a lighter and more classic environment, consider a claw foot tub which elevates it off the floor slightly. There are no shortage of styles – from traditional, transitional and contemporary, these functional art pieces are available in a variety of different shapes, finishes and sizes.
