World Tour of Design: Mexico

In last week’s World Tour of Design, I explored the visual elements of Moroccan design and architecture.  This week, I’d like to travel to Mexico and examine the design elements that characterize this beautiful region of the world.  This country has special significance to me because I actually designed a property in San Jose Del Cabo a few years ago.  It was not the typical idea of a house layout, yet it was a unique project surrounded by spectacular views of  both the pool and the ocean.

San Jose Del Cabo Home Design

The climate and environment have a profound influence on Mexican design.  For example, this particular home I designed was built on a hillside and, instead of the typical house enclosed by four walls, this home was comprised of several separate buildings that were open to each other.  Large sliding pocket doors were integrated into each building for security and protection from the seasonal elements. A major architectural element in Mexican design is the palapa.  Here this main living area which is constructed of dried palm leaves and pine beams provides much needed shade – and is very common in Mexican seaside communities.  The palapa is considered one of the most important architectural elements in Mexican design.   The warm climate of Mexico combined with the fresh ocean breeze near this property made this open layout very appealing, and the views it offered were unparalleled.

 Mexican Palapa

Earth tones are a key feature of Mexican design, from sandy beige to burnt sienna.  More vivid reds or oranges might also make an appearance, but the colors choices are typically warm as the summers in Mexico.  Integrated furniture is quite typical in Mexico – from beds and nightstands to seating in the palapa – they seem to organically rise up from the floor.

 Bedroom in Mexico

Mexican design also makes use of a lot of natural materials and handcrafted items.  Beautiful tiles, woven baskets, tropical plants, and wood furniture are all great accessories to implement if you are designing your home in the Mexican style.

Design Challenges: The Lofty Living Room

We all love high ceilings!  They make a room feel spacious, bright, and open, which is why so many homes feature an impressive two-story living or family room.  Tall windows flood the space with plenty of natural light, and two-story fireplaces can make a gorgeous impact on your home.  Unfortunately, there are times these two-story spaces can come with a two-story blank wall that can seem overwhelming in its size and emptiness.  These tall and massive walls can present a major design challenge at times, but there are ways to handle these large blank canvases to make them a beautiful feature and focal point within your home.

Add Moldings

Moldings, wainscoting and beefy trims can add instant detail and architectural interest to the walls, at the same time anchoring and framing decorative additions, like the large sconces and the art in this room.  Applying these details creates instant character and more intimacy to an otherwise lofty space.

Carving out  niches into your wall with recessed lighting provides a spectacular setting for highlighting art, flower arrangements, or your priceless collections.

Large-Scale Art Arrangements

You can either find a single large-scale piece of art to fill the wall or several pieces that can be artfully arranged within its own vignette.  Lay out a template in advance to ensure the scale of the pieces you’re using for your wall collage are proportionate to the volume of the space it occupies.

World Tour of Design: Morocco

I’m starting a new series on this blog where once a week I take you on a design tour to a different country, exploring the distinctive elements that characterize that country’s architecture and art and examining how you might be able to use those elements in your own home.  This week we’re taking a tour of Morocco, a country full of intricate geometric design and rich culture.  A trip to  Morocco is topping my list of “destination musts”. There are two main styles of architecture in Morocco: Andalusian and Southern Kasbah. Andalusian architecture is the more complex of the two styles, featuring complex detailed geometric patterns, white walls, and green stucco roofs.  Southern Kasbah is much simpler, primarily featuring impressive color schemes in varying shades of tan.

Kasbah Style Design

Mosaic Ceiling in Morocco If you want to introduce Moroccan elements into your home design projects, a great place to start is with the distinctive geometric elements.  Arch designs in doorways and windows, patterned tile, and rich geometric fabric will all inject Moroccan flair into your home.  The Andalusian style which infuses lush colors, patterns and fabrics is a perfect for the interior, where the natural tones of the Kasbah style is beautiful for outdoor rooms and seating areas where its earthy aesthetic integrates with the landscape.

A Redesigned Home Continues its Acting Career

A few years ago I redesigned a home for a client, never anticipating that that same home would one day earn a place on the big screen.  In December of 2011, however, I received the pleasant surprise that the home had become a set piece in Answers to Nothing, a Dane Cook movie that was released that month. I was once again surprised to discover that the very same home has added another line to its film resume, this time appearing in a very cute Dr. Scholl’s commercial.  Take a look: For comparison, here’s the screenshot of the kitchen I designed for this client as it appeared in Answers to Nothing:

It just goes to show you never know when your projects are going to develop a life of their own and go to completely unexpected places.  If this home continues its film career, maybe one day we’ll see it on the red carpet! I would love to help you redesign your house into a beautiful home fit for filming.  If you want a star-studded house, feel free to contact me at Interior Makeovers Inc. by calling 310-788-0990.

Finding The Perfect Pendant Light For A Kitchen

Last week I told you a bit about the kitchen renovation project on which I’ve been working, particularly integrating a custom range hood into the design to use as a focal point.  This week, we face another design decision: sourcing the perfect pendant lights to complement the cabinetry, countertop surfaces, backsplash and of course the metal range hood.  We will be looking for fixtures to suspend over the island, the peninsula and banquette. Pendant lights come in a wide variety of styles, sizes, shapes and finishes and like the pendant on a necklace, they can be an ornamental and beautiful addition to a room – and in this case highly functional! Because pendant lights come in so many varieties, it can sometimes pose a challenge to narrow down the options when deciding on a particular style of light for your home.  My client would love to introduce vintage influences into this kitchen design so we were able to narrow our focus to finding lighting options with vintage qualities.  I love these vendors and wanted to share these sources with you. Here are just a few that have caught my eye for various reasons:

Circa Lighting

Founded in the historic city of Savannah, Georgia, Circa Lighting is a fantastic source for classic pendant light designs with a touch of vintage flair.  I love these : the Large Country Industrial Pendant, the Yoke Pendant, and the Grosvenor Single Pendant.

Hudson Valley Lighting

Vintage style lighting is one of Hudson Valley Lighting’s specialties, and their light fixtures have a lot of subtle details that distinguish them from competitors.  The Pelham pendant light is available in a multitude of finishes.

Zia-Priven

Zia-Priven was created by a husband and wife team of designers, Marcia Zia and Paul Priven. This transitional style is distinctive, full of  warmth blended with understated elegance (no vintage qualities here).  I just love this line.

Using One Kings Lane to Find Unique Home Accessories

One Kings Lane Logo

I have a confession to make: I am addicted to One Kings Lane.  For the past few years, it has been one of my favorite sources for unique and affordable home furnishings and accessories, and with good reason.  With a constantly changing inventory and great discounts, it’s easy to get drawn into the excitement of hunting down the perfect addition to your home decor.  One Kings Lane merges all the appeal of a high-quality vintage thrift store with the convenience of online shopping.

One Kings Lane

I recently inherited some beautiful furniture from my in-laws’ home in New York, which I am trying to make work in my living room.  Right now, the furniture just needs a few added accents and occasional pieces to make the whole look of the room feel cohesive, so I have been hunting down tables, lighting, accessories, and a bar cart on One Kings Lane.  Every night I take a look at the “Vintage and Market Finds” section.  If I find something fantastic, I have to grab it; these items go fast.

One Kings Lane

I’ve been very happy with One Kings Lane, and I’ve made several purchases from them over the years for my own home.  I highly recommend signing up if you enjoy discovering items with a lot of character to add to your home decor.  I would love to help you find the ideal way of mixing and matching these items in your interior design, so feel free to contact me by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com. Renovating a Kitchen with a Custom Range Hood

One of my current renovation projects is an exciting kitchen renovation.  We will be expanding the size of the kitchen by relocating an adjacent laundry room and utilizing that extra square footage to create a highly functional and extremely beautiful new kitchen. In order to keep the design feeling focused and purposeful, we had to choose a focal point for the kitchen.  The focal point is the first place to which the eye is drawn when it enters a room, and it acts as an anchor for the rest of the design.  For this kitchen renovation, we are incorporating custom range hood, which will also provide instant character to this space.

In recent years, the range hood has evolved from the functional-but-boring feature of the kitchen into a beautifully designed focal point that can really enhance the entire style of the kitchen.  Custom range hoods still provide the very necessary function of  ventilation by removing odors and moisture from the home to improve your air quality, but they do so with an artful touch.  From stainless steel, zinc,  perwter or bronze, these range hoods can be customized to blend seamlessly into any kitchen design, and tend to steal the show by becoming the focal point of the entire kitchen.  This is our goal with this current kitchen renovation project. Here is the new floor plan for the kitchen renovation:

Floor Plan for the Kitchen Remodel

As you can see, the site lines in this spacious kitchen instantly draw your eyes to the centrally located range.  It is now easily visible from the entryway as well as from the built-in banquette, where the family will spend much of their time gathering and cozying in for those gourmet meals. Here is an elevation that shows the view of the proposed zinc/stainless barrel shaped range hood:

 Range Hood Elevation

The size of the range hood will undoubtedly complement the new kitchen design and make an impressive statement in the room. If you’re interested in adding a custom range hood to your kitchen, there are some excellent resources on both the East and the West coast.  It also helps to have the assistance of a professional designer when making design decisions as big as this one, so please feel free to contact me by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com.

Pantone Fashion Colors in Interior Design

Earlier this year, Pantone released its 2012 Fashion Color Report for fall, and last week they just released the 2013 Fashion Color Report for spring.  These reports predict the popular colors for the seasons as indicated by designer choices during New York Fashion Week.  They typically involve some bold and vibrant hues, some cool and muted tones, and at least one neutral that can tie all of the colors together. Though the Pantone Fashion Colors are determined largely by wearable fashions, they also play a role in interior design.  Using these colors in your interior remodel is a surefire way to give your home an updated and fresh appearance, and many of the chosen colors make an incredible statement in a room.  Here are a few examples of how the Pantone colors for both the current fall season and upcoming spring season can make an impact on your interior design.
