The Elegance of Antique Glass

If you want to add a touch of elegance and instant character to your home’s interior, antique glass tile is an incredible way to make a statement.  The mirrored surface reflects light in the room, expanding the whole space and at he same time makes the room appear more spacious than it is.  While both of these effects can also be accomplished with regular mirrored surfaces, the personality of antiqued glass creates a sense of warmth and a singular charm.  Its aged appearance gives a room a comforting lived-in atmosphere that is very welcoming to experience. One of the greatest things about antique glass tile is its versatility.  It can be used in any room as tiling or as an accent feature, and it mixes well with a variety of decorating styles.  It blends well with a vintage or eclectic decor,  fits in beautifully with classic or traditional interiors and helps to balance more modern designs.  Take a look at these beautiful examples for inspiration in  your own home!

Things to Consider When Choosing a Kitchen Backsplash

A backsplash is an important part of kitchen design for both function and style. Kitchens are messy places, and backsplashes not only protect your wall surfaces from the splatter of oils and sauces, they can also create an incredible visual impact in your kitchen.

Materials

Choosing the material for your backsplash is the first step to creating a beautiful design. There are several options, from traditional tile to modern metal.  Ceramic tile comes in a variety of shapes and colors, as does glass tile.  Back-painted sheets of glass are another option for a more modern and minimalist kitchen, and much easier to clean than smaller tiles.  For a more traditional look in your kitchen painted beadboard with a durable high-gloss paint is a great choice, while stainless steel and metal tiles are excellent for an unexpected and modern design.

Colors

Most backsplash materials lend themselves to a variety of color choices.  When you choose your colors, it’s important to always keep the conceptual design of the kitchen in mind.  A backsplash can create contrast in your kitchen; for example, if your cabinets and countertops are a dark material, choosing a lighter color for your backsplash will help create that balance in the overall kitchen design.  Alternatively, you can extend the color of your countertop into your backsplash or create an interesting visual impact with multiple colors of tile.

Pattern

You can add simple pattern to your backsplash in several ways.  Choose a ceramic tile with an embossed design and use it as an accent, or  a metal backsplash with an etched pattern.  Even if you choose a solid color of tile, you can create pattern with the shape of the tile or just by layout alone. Installing tile on the horizontal is much more traditional and conservative than laying on the vertical.  Take it a step further and stack the tile as apposed to a brick layout.

California Home+Design Invites You to Attend “Small Space Big Style”

If you live in a small space in Los Angeles, you are probably very familiar with some of the challenges and frustrations of trying to create a beautiful and functional home within the limits of your floor plan.  While small spaces can be difficult to design, the challenges they present inspire many creative and innovative styling solutions.  Recently, California Home+Design chose seven designers to explore these creative solutions to space limitations in one 1,400 square foot penthouse for their Small Space Big Style exhibit.  The resulting design is now open for public viewing at the Hollywood Condos in Los Angeles.

Each of the seven designers was given a designated part of the penthouse to design for an imaginary client.  Though the space was limited, the materials, colors, and ideas were not, and these designers flourished during this challenge.  The chance to use unusual materials and daring color choices was a creatively refreshing experience that resulted in an incredibly inspired space.  The penthouse is now a luxurious, chic home that makes the most of its small square footage with innovative space-saving solutions.

Add Texture to Your Walls

Mother of Pearl Texture by Maya RomanoffWhen designing an interior, deciding on wall decor is often a matter of choosing a paint color or perhaps a wallpaper and then picking out items to hang around the room.  Sometimes wall design can get fairly intricate with patterns or even elaborate murals, but homeowners also have the option of branching out past two-dimensional design with the increasingly wide variety of textured wall coverings available. I am currently working with a client who adores texture on her walls.  We are in the process of redesigning several rooms in her home, most notably her expansive foyer.  As the room that gives the first impression to guests in her home, we want to make sure the foyer is a particularly remarkable space when we’re finished with it.  Our first step will be removing the thirty-year-old troweled plaster from the walls; its heavy texture reminds me of meringue on a lemon pie. We’ve been sourcing some gorgeous wall textures to use in the foyer as well as a powder room, which we will be presenting to our client at our next meeting.  We’ve found a nice variety from both Maya Romanoff and Phillip Jeffries.  From Maya Romanoff, we’ve picked out the Mother of Pearl, Bedazzled Geode in Metallic Taupe, and Remember Paris in Silver Birch.  From Phillip Jeffries we particularly like the Granite Stone in Platino.

Textured Wall Samples

As you can see from these samples, we are leaning heavily toward neutral tones for the walls.  While bolder colors are certainly an option, textured walls make a dramatic statement in any room on their own merits.  Combining the texture with saturated hues runs the risk of becoming overwhelming, but neutrals can lend an understated elegance to the striking element of texture. How do you feel about textured walls?  Feel free to share your opinions with us in the comments!  Regardless of whether you love them or shy from them, I would love to help you design a unique space that reflects your own personal tastes.  Contact us at Interior Makeovers Inc. by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com.

In Search of the Ideal Wood Door for New Kitchen Cabinets

When redesigning and redecorating a home, it’s inevitable that certain challenges and restrictions will crop up during the process.  In some ways, designing a home from nothing can be a lot more straightforward than redesigning a home around existing features, especially when the homeowner is particularly attached to one or more of these features.  Solving these challenges is always an exciting exercise in creativity for a designer. As an example, I am currently working on redesigning a kitchen for a client as a part of an entire home redesign.  The challenge with the kitchen redesign comes from one of its largest features: the countertops.  The client already has gorgeous countertops created from an exotic, distinct, and exclusive granite called Sodalite Blue Granite, and she is understandably very attached to these countertops.  For this reason, the kitchen cannot be entirely re-planned or replaced, and we are limited to the existing framework.

Sodalite Blue Countertop

Because the Sodalite Blue Granite countertops are so distinct and colorful, sourcing wood for the new kitchen cabinets that will compliment the counters is our greatest challenge.  To add to the challenge, the client does not like the appearance of molded doors and feels as though flat doors are too plain for her. To compliment the cool tones of the Sodalite Blue Granite, we are sourcing wood with warm tones in their finishes.  We’ve chosen a range of options for our client to consider, from a bright and cheerful Beech to a deep and elegant Wenge.  The wood chosen for the cabinets can set the tone for the entire kitchen and help guide the remainder of the redesign and redecorating process.

Wood Door Options

As for the style of the cabinet doors, we are compromising between the more ornate molded doors and a plain flat door by offering the options of adding a slight beveled or routered edge.  This addition will add visual interest to the appearance of the doors while still avoiding the look of molded doors that the client dislikes. Which wood would you choose to pair with the Sodalite Blue Granite?  We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!

Reupholstering a Banquette: Snags and Solutions

I love banquettes for their coziness and space-saving attributes.  They are more comfortable and capable of seating more people than most kitchen chairs and can be conveniently tucked into an odd corner or nook of your home.  Their comfort and convenience makes them a natural spot for spending relaxing time throughout the day or gathering for a casual and lingering conversation with friends and family. A good banquette sees a lot of use and will therefore require reupholstering after a while. I was recently commissioned to reupholster a beautiful banquette for a client.  Their banquette had been well-used over the past five years, and the fabric was showing substantial wear and tear.  Though the banquette was nearly twelve feet long, the project itself was simple and straightforward, or so I thought.
We decided to use a strong and durable vinyl for the new upholstery on the banquette, and we found a beautiful upholstered vinyl fabric that looked promising and stood up well to initial tests for durability. Unfortunately, partway through the upholstering process we discovered that the embroidery on the vinyl was too delicate.  The fabric hadn’t even seen use in the home before snags started forming, and I couldn’t let the unraveling, delicate fabric into my client’s home.  I showed the supplier and immediately contacted the client about the issue.  Together we selected a simpler and more durable vinyl fabric, and the supplier was kind enough to cover the cost of the new fabric.   The “problem” vinyl fabric:

We have since finished the banquette and all is well. I used the lessons learned from this experience with the embroidered vinyl when recovering my own banquette in my kitchen nook.  Sometimes even the simplest projects run into their snags, but there is never an excuse to sacrifice quality craftsmanship for an easier solution.   Reselected vinyl-mid installation :
