Passport To Creativity Contest For A Trip To Spain

It’s been about a month now since I began a weekly “World Tour of Design” series and if I’m lucky I just might be able to tour a country myself soon….and I’ll take you with me.   I recently entered the Tile of Spain: Passport to Creativity 2013 contest to win an architectural trip to Spain!  It’s been way too long since I last visited the country and I would LOVE to get back there!  So why not enter a contest….right?   This contest, is open to accredited architects and interior designers from across the country and like most contests we needed to answer a series of questions and submit a photo of ourselves somehow involved with Spanish Tile.

As you can see from these photos, the product line is absolutely stunning.  Materials are available in a variety of striking graphic patterns, sizes and finishes.   There is no shortage of gorgeous applications for these tile products, some of which you can see in the project portfolio at Porcelanosa, one of the largest tile distributors in the United States. These state-of-the-art porcelain tiles  integrate beautifully into any design style.

If I am one of the lucky ones chosen for this tour of Spain, I will have the opportunity to immerse myself in the local culture, learn firsthand about the architecture, design, and cuisine, and learn so much more about this innovative porcelain product and how it can impact our design vision and inspire us for future projects .  I would also attend the International Ceramic Tile and Bath Furnishings Show, which is bound to be full of inspiration. World Tour of Design: Japan

In our previous World Tour of Design, we visited the romantic and varied design aesthetic of France.  This week we travel a little farther East to the Land of the Rising Sun: Japan. Japanese design differs from most classic Western design in its clean, minimalist style and open spaces.  While many Western homes tend to be filled with an abundance of furniture, art and accessories –  in rooms separated by walls and doors, Japanese design prefers a more spacious, clean, and less adorned appearance. Furniture is kept at a minimum and in fact in the more traditional homes, most furniture is low to the floor.  Low tables with floor cushions for seating makes the overall space feel more voluminous, and the entire interior feel more open and light.  Large sliding doors creates a beautiful flow from one room to the next.

Open Japanese Interior

Japanese design also integrates nature into both materials and decor.  Materials commonly used in Japanese homes include tatami straw, bamboo, rice paper, wood and rock. Fountains, plants, and plant-inspired decor also feature prominently in many Japanese interiors, and many also open up to the outdoors with the use of sliding doors – which provides a seamless transition from the interior to the exterior.

 Integrating Nature into Japanese Design

The exterior architecture of traditional Japanese homes is built with wood, straw, bark, paper, and similar materials.  Stone is rarely used in exterior design.  Walls do not support the structure; rather, posts and lintels carry the weight of the roof while walls are often thin and movable.  The roof is the most prominent feature of the architecture, notable for its gentle curve and large size.

If you enjoy clean lines and minimalist, open spaces, bringing elements of Japanese design into your own home might suit you very well.  I would love to help you design your zen-like Japanese-inspired interior!  Simply contact me at Interior Makeovers Inc. by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com. Simple and Elegant Thanksgiving Centerpieces

Thanksgiving has come awfully quickly this year, but there is still plenty of time to perfect the look of your dining room table before it’s time for your delicious feast. Last year, I shared some of my favorite Thanksgiving table settings, but this year I’d like to focus on simple and elegant centerpiece ideas.  These centerpieces don’t have to take up a lot of space on the table, leaving more room for all the dishes of my favorite meal of the year! Nature-inspired Thanksgiving table centerpieces are some of the most beautiful, affordable, and simple centerpieces to arrange.  While you’re hunting down the perfect turkey, consider stopping by a florist for some lovely blooms in autumn colors.  Sure you can always arrange them in a vase, but there are more unique ways to use your flowers in your Thanksgiving decor. For a modern and minimalist approach just a couple of flowers arranged in a glass container will give you the wow factor.

Modern Flower Arrangement

Or you could remove the blossoms and arrange them underneath upturned glassware.  You could even add some candles or mini pumpkins on top of the glass stems.

Flowers Under Glasses Centerpiece

Thanksgiving is a feast, so incorporating food into your flower arrangements is a great way to create a decorating theme.  You can color-coordinate flowers with different colors of bell peppers cut to hold them like a vase. Flower Arrangement with Bell Peppers Or you could use butternut squash as a vase.  I love this look so much that I’m planning using it for my own table. I’ll post a photo of it next week!

Butternut Squash Centerpiece

If you want a centerpiece that will look fresh for longer than flowers, you could try this arrangement of miniature pumpkins held on candlesticks.

Pumpkins and Candlesticks

You can also get your kids involved by having them fill vases with layers of dried legumes, fruits, and nuts to act as a colorful candle holder.

Featured in “Design Hot Spots” in this Month’s Traditional Home Magazine

In this month’s edition of Traditional Home Magazine, my friend Tamara Mathews Stevenson wrote a piece featuring the favorite go-to spots for design finds from fifteen designers across the country.  I’m honored to say I was one of the designers chosen for this article, and I shared Calypso St. Barth Home, one of my favorite spots in Santa Monica, California.

Calypso St. Barth Home

Tamara is an incredibly talented writer who writes her own very popular blog, so I really appreciated the feature in her article, and I’m honored to be among the other great talents also featured.  Thank you Tamara for inviting me to contribute to your article.

Tamara’s piece in Traditional Home is a neat interactive map that allows you to click on one of the featured cities and learn more about the designers and their favorite design spots in that area.  It’s a fantastic resource if you’re looking for design gems around the country. Be sure to take some time to explore the interactive story and be sure to take a look at Tamara’s blog, Nest by Tamara.  It’s well worth the visit.

World Tour of Design: France

On our last World Tour of Design, we took a look at the features of Mexican design. On this week’s tour, we’re visiting a country that has been extremely influential in both art and architecture for the past several centuries: France.  French design, like the country itself, inspires an atmosphere of romanticism, luxury, and timeless taste.

French Inspired Interior

France has a rich architectural history, with a mixture of buildings in styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque to Rococo to Art Nouveau.  The incredible variety of architectural styles you can find in Paris alone, much less the rest of France, leaves you open to plenty of possibilities when adding a French flair to your design.  One approach you could take is choosing a favorite building in France and incorporating your favorite elements of its architectural style into your design.

Notre Dame

Perhaps the most popular French style in American decorating is the French Country or French Provincial style.  This characteristic style features rustic weathering, ruffles, and simple furnishings.  It’s less ornate than a lot of famous French architecture, but more accessible and comfortable for everyday living while still retaining an elegant flair.  The colors and patterns in a French Country design are inspired by the colors and plants of the French countryside, so French Country interiors tend to be light, bright, and refreshing in appearance.

Benjamin Moore 2013 Color of the Year: Lemon Sorbet

The bold and saturated colors popular in 2012 are being replaced in 2013 with more subtle and softer hues.  Paint company Benjamin Moore has recently released its 2013 color of the year, a light pastel shade of yellow called “Lemon Sorbet.”  This cheerful shade  tends to rejuvenate and stimulate your mind, body and soul – epitomizes warmth and is a fitting choice for an increasingly optimistic atmosphere – and a sunny outlook to the future.

Lemon Sorbet

Using Lemon Sorbet in your home is a great way to introduce a feeling of happiness to a room.  Its light tones keep it from becoming overwhelming or uncomfortable, and it’s a great color for reflecting natural light to brighten up a space.

 Lemon Sorbet Living Room

This shade works well with the other pastel colors that are predicted to become popular in 2013, as well as many of the stronger hues from 2012.  A room full of pastel shades is very calming and bright, while a space that contrasts pastels with strong accent  colors creates a more vibrant atmosphere.

What do you think of the shift to brighter pastel colors in 2013?  Share your opinions in the comments; I’d love to hear from you!  I would also love to help you design your home with the trending colors of 2013; just contact me at Interior Makeovers Inc. by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com. Finding Home Accessories at Rolling Greens Hollywood

One of my favorite places in Hollywood is a shop located at Beverly Boulevard and Gardner Avenue called Rolling Greens.  Occupying the historic Town Tire Co. building, this unique spot is full of inspiration both in the design of the building and in the plants and home accessories they carry.

Rolling Greens Hollywood

Rolling Greens Hollywood is full of one-of-a-kind and hand-made finds from a variety of sources, including estate sales, foreign bazaars, and artists’ studios.  They also have a huge selection of plants in their greenhouses, including both exotic indoor plants and blooming plants.  Whether designing an interior or an exterior room, Rolling Greens never fails to inspire me.

Rolling Greens Hollywood

Apparently I’m not alone in my love of Rolling Greens –  Martha Stewart visited the shop last March and enjoyed it so much she decided to share a photo tour of her time there.  It’s definitely worth a peek if you can’t visit Rolling Greens in person. If it’s good enough for Martha…….
