World Tour of Design: France

On our last World Tour of Design, we took a look at the features of Mexican design. On this week’s tour, we’re visiting a country that has been extremely influential in both art and architecture for the past several centuries: France.  French design, like the country itself, inspires an atmosphere of romanticism, luxury, and timeless taste.

French Inspired Interior

France has a rich architectural history, with a mixture of buildings in styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque to Rococo to Art Nouveau.  The incredible variety of architectural styles you can find in Paris alone, much less the rest of France, leaves you open to plenty of possibilities when adding a French flair to your design.  One approach you could take is choosing a favorite building in France and incorporating your favorite elements of its architectural style into your design.

Notre Dame

Perhaps the most popular French style in American decorating is the French Country or French Provincial style.  This characteristic style features rustic weathering, ruffles, and simple furnishings.  It’s less ornate than a lot of famous French architecture, but more accessible and comfortable for everyday living while still retaining an elegant flair.  The colors and patterns in a French Country design are inspired by the colors and plants of the French countryside, so French Country interiors tend to be light, bright, and refreshing in appearance.
