Hallways are Rooms Too: Design Them for Living

When thinking about design projects to tackle in your home, hallways can often be overlooked.  Unlike the foyer, hallways are typically thought of as transition spaces, but the reality is…hallways are rooms too!  The amount of foot traffic that passes through these corridors can rival 405 Freeway at times.  Aside from the occasional gallery of family photos, most hallways remain under-stated under-designed and under-whelming.  But the reality is these passageways have a loads of potential for creative expression and functionality and should be treated with the same love and attention as the other rooms in your home. Images Via: Decorpad and Pinterest With a few key design elements you can turn a neglected hallway into a great looking space that you enjoy everyday during your "rush hour" traffic. Add a Punch of Color: Many hallways can seem small, cramped and dark. This can be a great place to go bold with some pops of color.  There are several ways to achieve this, depending on your comfort level.  From colorful artwork adorning the walls, to simply painting out the doors or walls in your favorite shades,  the hallway can benefit from a burst of color.   Consider introducing a colorful floor runner, painted furniture pieces or accent with colorful accessories.  A small console table with a bouquet of flowers, a colorful stack of vintage suitcases, or colorful frames for family photos can all add a touch of boldness to liven up your hallway. Image Via: Elle Decor Image Via: Pinterest Showcase Your Collectables: I know a lot of us have some unusual objets which we've collected from our travels over the years.  The hallway is an ideal space to showcase those unique finds as they will instantly add to the personalization of your home and create points of interest or focal points. Whether it's a quirky find from an antique shop or objects from exotic ports, find the perfect spot to highlight them down the hallway. Image Via: Rue Magazine Extra Storage: No matter the home, extra storage space is always a welcome feature and the hallway can be a great place to find it.  Narrow shelves can be recessed into the walls to hold books for households of avid readers or to showcase anything from trophies to treasures.  Hallways near entrances can have unique coat hooks and wall-mounted mail sorters to help keep the home organized.  You can also take advantage of the space between studs in your wall and create small built-in cabinets that can store anything from rolled-up linens to seasonal decorations. Image Via: Pinterest Integration: Transforming your hallway from a walkway to a utilitarian and functional area is a great idea if you have the space.  Console tables are an incredibly versatile addition to any hallway, and with the addition of a small chair can easily make a cute and functional desk area.  If you have a wide enough hallway or landing off your staircase, add a window seat along with bookshelves for a quiet spot to rest, reflect and read.  Image Via Houzz There are so many creative ways to spruce up all types of hallways…so don't let yours go to waste! A Mid-Century Modern Home Tour: The Kitchen

As we continue the tour of a mid-century modern style, it's time to step into the room that continues to be the heart and soul of the home - the kitchen!  Over the years the kitchen has evolved into a multi-purpose space.  There are times it will serve as a four star restaurant, gourmet deli, dining room, office, entertainment room, living room - and all around social hub! In more modern environments the open kitchen layout and design integrates well into the overall architecture of the home particularly when orienting the kitchen toward the open living space.  Below is the new kitchen floor plan of  our #PalmSprings project.  By removing  existing walls and re-orienting the workspace toward the expansive living area and spectacular mountain view, natural light will instantly flood the living ares of the home. Open Spaces, Natural Tones, Clean Lines – The open floor plan allows you to interact with your guests while you are in  entertainment mode, making it a much more social, approachable and inclusive experience. Deep architectural elements complimented by light natural tones and clean and simple lines lend a distinctive modern charm to the kitchen. Image via Mid Century Home Let the Wood Take Center Stage – Natural wood tones and multiple species are common in this design style. Showcasing the beauty of these woods through the cabinetry and seating is an ideal place to highlight their natural beauty. Image via Pinterest Built-in Banquette and Modern Chairs – These days, a kitchen is not complete without a comfy seating area to enjoy the food and the company of family and friends. Regardless of the size, a sleek built-in banquette would work beautifully within a mid-century modern inspired kitchen. Introduce a pop of color on the tabletop and sprinkle a few Arne Jacobsen chairs around and you have the most stylish breakfast nook for you and homework center for the kids! Image Via Pinterest Use the Right Lighting – Good lighting is essential to a well-functioning kitchen design no matter what style, and selecting a favorite mid century modern pendant for that space can really pack a punch! Whether you're hanging pendants over your kitchen island or a single fixture over dining table, find your favorite piece. Does the sparkle of a sputnik-like chandelier give you the look you're after  or is it the avocado PH pendant light?  Either way a stylized modern fixture like these will instantly speak the mid century modern lingo. A Recap of My Time at KBIS

Last post, I talked about the KBIS and NKBA's 50th anniversary, but today I'd like to go a little deeper into my actual involvement with the show.  While at KBIS, I gave two presentation, joined a panel discussion, and was even on a radio interview.  It was a busy show, but I enjoyed every minute of it. My two presentations were organized to introduce the revolutionary new showroom technology from QueX.  This technology allows users to interact with a virtual showroom and virtual home designs to help designers and clients work more efficiently together when planning and creating a design project. It takes out much of the guesswork and the chance for miscommunications by providing a "virtual" face to face between the designer, client and any  major supplier or GC - enhancing the collaboration process. I was thrilled to be among one of eight designers selected to interpret a home space for different generations; my design assignment was the GenX Kitchen.  We created drawings, concept boards and virtual 3D's of our designs which were then loaded on to the QueX platform -  allowing us to interact with our audience using the multi-touch display screens. Our Fabulous Featured Designers: Andie Day, Carmen Christensen, Cheryl Kees Clendenon, Corey Klassen, (me), Meredith Heron, Susan Serra and Tyler Wisler. Working with QueX technology allows everyone involved to get a full overview of all aspects of the design process, at the same time enhancing the communication between the client and the design team as a whole. I was also asked by Veronika Miller of Modenus to share some highlights and favorite finds from #BlogTourNYC and the Architectural Digest Home Design Show.  I was joined by other alum from previous Blog Tours: Tamara Stephenson - BlogTour London, Kelly Morisseau - BlogTourNYC, and Brandon Smith - BlogTour Cologne.  They all had some great insights on how to use some of their favorite discoveries as design inspiration. Finally, I was invited to do a radio interview for MyFixitUpLife.  Mark and Theresa, the hilarious couple behind this helpful website take you on an insiders tour of the home improvement industry.  They hosted three - hour long shows during KBIS and I was lucky enough to get a jam packed 15 minutes with them.  They are so full of life and energy...I could have spoken with them for hours! I was so glad to have had this opportunity to meet all of these talented people and experience the industry trends and emerging technology. Stay tuned for more NOLA adventures! Stay Inspired!

It’s All in the Details: Adding the Finishing Touches to a Home Design

When planning a major renovation of any space in your home, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and become overwhelmed with the massive changes taking place.  Walls are removed, kitchen's are gutted and dust is flying....just for starters. Everything old becomes new again - new cabinetry, appliances, floors and furniture are installed - with new colors infused throughout . Yet some of the most important elements of the overall design can be the finishing touches and subtle details that are nestled inside. It's these details which make a house.....your home! Once the big changes are made, the final touches and details provides the room with a sense character which unifies the entire design.  It's like the garnish on a dish or the right accessories to complete an outfit; without the details the room would look new and function well, but look ...a little flat. Spectacular lighting is one detail that should never be overlooked.  The right lighting can transform the mundane to magnificent. In a"modern" environment blend recessed lighting with a sculptural element, for a simple and very effective detail.  Well-chosen light fixtures really acts as the  jewelry for a room. Selecting the proper display items, decorative accessories, and artwork to suit an overall design can be a major challenge.  You want them to reflect your personality and tastes, but they also need to work well with the other colors, styles, and design elements in the room. A single, piece of  artwork  or spectacular chandelier that pack a punch will not only create a focal point in the room, but add your personality to the space. What are your favorite finishing touches?  Share them with me in the comments or on my Facebook page! Stay Inspired! Images via Better Homes & Gardens, Pinterest, Architectural Digest

Pantone’s Color of the Year – 2013

Pantone, a leading authority on color and color communication across industries, has released the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year.  After 2012's vibrant and warm Tangerine Tango, 2013 takes a refreshing dip in the cooler end of the color spectrum with Emerald. Image via: Houzz Emerald is a more balanced and sophisticated tone than the energetic Tangerine Tango, but it also has its own rejuvenating energy that, while not as vivacious as Tangerine Tango, is no less potent.  Historically, this is a color used to symbolize growth, healing, and prosperity, making it a great choice for the promising future we hope to see in 2013.   Image via: Veranda Using Emerald in your home will convey a sense of both calm and opulence, adding a lushness to your interior design.  Using it as a primary tone in a room might be a bit overwhelming, but it makes a beautiful accent when paired with neutrals like grays and sandy earth tones.  An Emerald accent can become an instant focal point in a room, rejuvenating the look of a space as it rejuvenates you.   Image via: Veranda I would love to help you design your home's interior with luscious Emerald accents!  Just contact me at Interior Makeovers Inc. by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com, and I'll be happy to give your home a unique Pantone-inspired design.

Renovating a Kitchen with a Custom Range Hood

One of my current renovation projects is an exciting kitchen renovation.  We will be expanding the size of the kitchen by relocating an adjacent laundry room and utilizing that extra square footage to create a highly functional and extremely beautiful new kitchen. In order to keep the design feeling focused and purposeful, we had to choose a focal point for the kitchen.  The focal point is the first place to which the eye is drawn when it enters a room, and it acts as an anchor for the rest of the design.  For this kitchen renovation, we are incorporating custom range hood, which will also provide instant character to this space.  Designer: Linda McDougald                                Photo: Rachael Boling In recent years, the range hood has evolved from the functional-but-boring feature of the kitchen into a beautifully designed focal point that can really enhance the entire style of the kitchen.  Custom range hoods still provide the very necessary function of  ventilation by removing odors and moisture from the home to improve your air quality, but they do so with an artful touch.  From stainless steel, zinc,  perwter or bronze, these range hoods can be customized to blend seamlessly into any kitchen design, and tend to steal the show by becoming the focal point of the entire kitchen.  This is our goal with this current kitchen renovation project. Here is the new floor plan for the kitchen renovation:   As you can see, the site lines in this spacious kitchen instantly draw your eyes to the centrally located range.  It is now easily visible from the entryway as well as from the built-in banquette, where the family will spend much of their time gathering and cozying in for those gourmet meals. Here is an elevation that shows the view of the proposed zinc/stainless barrel shaped range hood:   The size of the range hood will undoubtedly complement the new kitchen design and make an impressive statement in the room. If you're interested in adding a custom range hood to your kitchen, there are some excellent resources on both the East and the West coast.  It also helps to have the assistance of a professional designer when making design decisions as big as this one, so please feel free to contact me by calling 310-788-0990 or emailing Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com.   Custom Range Hood Designed by Linda McDougald, Photo by Rachael Boling

eHow Video: Wall Paint Color Transition Ideas

The open floor plan is becoming increasingly popular in both newly constructed and renovated homes, which at times could pose a few painting challenges along the way – particularly when multiple colors and tones are used from one space to the next. A good rule of thumb is to select a more unified color palette, which will serve as the backdrop to your canvas.  By varying the shades of your favorite color, it will set the stage for your furniture and décor. A Master Bath Renovation – Tile Installation

The time has finally arrived where we are neck deep in tile, stone, adhesives and grout.  The tile installation for this master bath renovation has begun. These materials provide the overall character to this space and reflects the homeowners’ personal design style and nature-inspired design sensibility. With her profound connection to nature we were instantly drawn to a mixture of organic textures, neutral colors and natural patterns, which we found in stones, pebbles, woods and marbles. It is all about bringing the outdoors in and tactfully combining the five natural elements of earth, fire, water, wood and metal into this space to create a soothing and tranquil spa environment. Here is a visual reminder into the color/material palette of this “Nature-Inspired Master Bath”. Investing in such specialized products and materials in turn requires precision installation!  While budget is always a factor in home design and renovation projects – do not select your tile contractor based on price alone! If you have invested in unique and specialty products – then spend a little more and hire the expert proficient in working with these types of materials.  This will result in a finished quality product! Intricate spacing, layout and patterning is essential for the installation of the featured bamboo tile wall.   The (almost completed) bamboo-inspired wall tile adds a focal point and a sense of drama to this space. The natural pebble shower floor provides a gentle foot massage, while the Italian marble tile floor exudes a natural elegance blending a host of colors – unifying all design elements. This 3’x6” matte stoneware tile installed in a vertical brick pattern on the plumbing wall tends to sooth the heavily textured materials scattered throughout the master bath and compliments the indoor/outdoor vibe. Selecting a grout color for the natural pebbled shower floor can be tricky.  If using a similar product – wet the stones first to get a sense of their true finished tone - then choose your grout color. Making a final decision on the countertop surface material while using the matte stoneware tile as the inspiration. Cambria vs. Caesarstone. And the winner is ……..   To Be Continued… I would love to help you design your Master Bath Retreat.  Contact us at Interior Makeovers Inc.310-788-0990 or email: Lori@InteriorMakeovers.com. A Master Bath Renovation – The Finishing Stage

After weeks of demo and the rough stages we are so thrilled to have finally entered the drywall phase of this renovation.  All the framing, plumbing and electrical revisions have been completed, inspected and approved.  Thankfully we have graduated from the rough stage and are moving on to the finish phase of this master bath renovation. Things should move along rather quickly from this point forward (or so my client hopes), as the trades prepare for the installation of the exquisite tiles, stone, cabinetry, fixtures and fittings.  Expert preparation on each and every surface is imperative.  We have some unique and specialized materials specified for this nature inspired master bath.  All of which require ideal surface conditions and expert installation techniques to ensure these products shine. Looking forward to the tile installation coming up next week. Last post I mentioned our onsite “shear wall” issue and how it seemed to hinder the sizing of our windows and limited the amount of natural light be filtered into the space.  So we “skooched” (a highly technical term) the inner windows slightly to accommodate one more window of equal size – and equally spaced – therefore only needing to re-frame and order one more window of the same size.    Unfortunately from our last site meeting to this one – the pony wall (which was originally framed 8” too high) was not lowered to the correct height.  Always stay on top of your plans…..have everything documented and double check everything on site! Here is an exterior view of the beach home with the newly framed windows along the left side. To Be Continued……..
